Electrifying Refining and Petrochemical Industries

How electrification of refining and petrochemical processes accelerates decarbonization.

Around the globe, companies in nearly all industries are accelerating decarbonization efforts to meet their environmental goals – both internal and external. However, despite ongoing sustainability initiatives, carbon dioxide (CO2 ) and other greenhouse gas emissions are at a record high.

The oil and gas industry is under heavy pressure to decarbonize because it is one of the largest greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting sectors. Oil refineries represent over 4% of worldwide GHG emissions (1.59 gigatons of emissions).

Process electrification – using electricity to meet energy needs that are traditionally met with fossil fuels – is one avenue for reducing the oil and gas industry’s GHG emissions.
