5 Principles for 800 VDC in AI Data Centers: Rack-level Architectures as the Immediate Enabler
The demand for increased AI workload performance is pushing rack power densities beyond the practical limits of conventional AC and 48 VDC distribution. Electrical infrastructure must evolve to deliver stable power safely, efficiently, and at scale. The industry has increasingly aligned around 800 VDC to support these next generation AI densities. In this paper, we identify 800 VDC power racks – sometimes referred to as “sidecars” – as the immediate enabler of this shift. Relocating conversion out of the IT rack and increasing voltage reduces congestion from feeds & connectors, frees compute space, and overcomes low-voltage power constraints. We present five guiding principles to help designers and operators evaluate and adopt 800 VDC architectures aligned to their facility and business objectives. These principles address architectural variations, ecosystem readiness, protection and grounding coordination, energy storage integration, and operational execution – laying a practical path from rack-level deployment toward future, more centralized architectures.
