Big Machines: More than a sum of their parts

Let’s face it, as human beings we’re quite good at making things, and giving them names, when they’re just collections of bits and pieces joined together.

It makes for easier language, for one thing. Just try describing a crushing machine based on a description of its component parts. The words we use to describe these joined-together bits tend to get across the idea of what the things do. ‘Crushing machine’ implies ruthless efficiency, strength, and power in a couple of words. However, a crushing machine missing a blowbar assembly, isn’t really a crusher. It’s simply a collection of worthless bits, powerless and pointless – until the replacement bit is found.
