THE STATE OF FREIGHT Q1 OUTLOOK

FreightWaves CEO and founder Craig Fuller and Zach Strickland, head of freight market intelligence, discussed macroeconomic and freight market conditions during the last State of Freight webinar, filmed remotely due to severe winter weather. Fuller and Strickland covered the state of the truckload capacity burn-off and reasons to be optimistic about freight demand, as well as geopolitical risks such as the Red Sea crisis.

First in the order of business was an immediate update on the U.S. truckload market: January is typically the slowest month of the year, and this January’s volumes were also constrained by severe winter weather that affected much of the Midwest, Southeast and East Coast. Snow, ice and freezing temperatures — especially when they are severe or in markets unaccustomed to those conditions — tend to suppress consumer activity. Consumers stay inside and buy fewer items, outside of a few categories like grocery staples.
